Together We Thrive: Innovation Through Collective Creativity
Innovation is at the core of how we deliver long-term value at Travelers. Alex Martinez, a Director of Innovation for our Enterprise Innovation team, is at the forefront of this effort, championing a culture where new ideas thrive.
Alex considers his role one of the most exciting in the company. “I design and launch activities that educate employees and inspire them to ask themselves, ‘What can we do differently?’” he explains. “My job is focused on inspiring an innovation mindset across all business lines and functions.”
Travelers’ long-term sustainability requires that we do three things successfully: perform, transform and fulfill our promise to take care of our customers, communities and employees. Alex’s work is focused on the transform side – ensuring that innovation is a part of our everyday work and continuous improvement.
For Alex, innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. “Sustainability means exploring new avenues to improve the business, finding new ways to celebrate innovation and encouraging even more creative thinking – all to help us prepare for the future and ensure that we’re ready to tackle tomorrow’s challenges,” he says.
One of the most impactful ways Travelers nurtures innovation is through Innovation Jam (InJam), an annual competition where employees collaborate to develop solutions that will shape the future of the company. In 2025, more than 1,400 participants formed teams to pitch ideas with real business potential under the theme “Level Up,” underlining this unique opportunity to better their skills through creativity and collaboration.
Since its launch, InJam has yielded innovations that extend our advantage in risk expertise, provide great experiences for our customers and optimize productivity and efficiency across the company – Travelers’ strategic innovation priorities. Employees have proposed myriad impactful ideas, from streamlining hiring processes to detecting fraud in medical records. In fact, 62 patents have been awarded to Travelers since 2013 as a result of InJam innovations, including a cargo theft app that evolved into a key theft-reporting feature on the Trucker Path platform.
Innovation at Travelers is a mindset that anyone can embrace. Every employee has the potential to spark ideas that drive meaningful change. Alex states, “With the right idea and the minds to back it up, even a small idea has the chance to ripple into something much larger.” As Travelers continues to evolve, initiatives like InJam will keep employees at the heart of progress.
