How One Employee’s Innovative Idea Is Saving Customers’ Vehicles During Hurricanes
At Travelers, we believe great ideas can come from anywhere in our organization. This philosophy came to life when Callie, Associate Group General Counsel, Claim, identified a critical problem during hurricane season while watching news coverage of Hurricane Ian.
“During storms, we’re always telling people, ‘Move your vehicle to higher ground,'” Callie explains in our featured video. “So, I thought, ‘how can we actually help them do that?'”
This observation sparked an innovative solution – what if Travelers could help customers protect their vehicles by prepaying for elevated parking garage spaces before a hurricane makes landfall? This is when SaveMyRide℠ was born.
Callie’s concept quickly gained traction through Travelers’ Innovation Jam (InJam), our internal hackathon-style innovation event where employees can pitch ideas and collaborate with teams to develop solutions. “We brought Callie’s ‘Save My Ride’ idea to InJam,” says Aubrey, Director, Experience Management, who helped transform the concept into reality.
The team then established a pilot program with parking facilities in flood-prone locations. Not long after, in August 2023, Hurricane Idalia provided the first real-world test. The team sent offers to 8,000 Travelers customers.
The program’s success continued with Hurricane Helene, where storm surges were expected to exceed six feet. “We parked 18 cars with a total value of over $500,000,” Tim, Claim Auto Product, shares in the video. “It alone saved us $70,000 in loss costs.”
When Hurricane Milton followed on Helene’s heels with even worse forecasts, the program was ready to help even more customers.” Showing vulnerable customers we’re here to help prevent a claim demonstrates our long-term thinking because it fosters loyalty and retention,” Aubrey explains. Isabel, Director, Enterprise Innovation, adds, “It really is the perfect example of Travelers living our Promise.”
For Callie, the initiative’s purpose remains clear: “SaveMyRide℠ is really all about caring for our customers to give them peace of mind during what can be really scary times. And by extension, a long-term customer retention builder.”
The development of this product exemplifies how Travelers fosters an environment where employees are encouraged to think creatively and develop solutions that address real-world challenges.
