Together We Thrive: The Impact of Eco-Efficient Operations

Patrick Scullin, Regional Vice President of Corporate Real Estate, works with various business lines and functions to build a Travelers workspace that accommodates everyone.
At Travelers, we continually look for ways to make our operations both energy and cost efficient, all while keeping in mind the Travelers Promise: our commitment to take care of our customers, our communities and each other. As Patrick explains, “Reducing our energy consumption helps the environment and our communities, and it can also decrease operating costs, which benefits the company and its shareholders.”
Over the last 15 years, our company has been focused on reducing emissions in a thoughtful way. In 2011, we set out to reduce our absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions for owned operations by 40% by 2020. By year-end 2020, we exceeded that initial goal.
Patrick explains, “Think about when you drive your gas-powered car. That’s Scope 1 – the direct emissions from something you own. In Travelers’ case, Scope 1 comprises any emissions from company-owned vehicles and any combustion from on-site operations.”
Patrick continues, “Think of Scope 2 as the electricity that gets delivered to a home from the power company. The homeowners are unsure how the power is being produced. It could be coal, nuclear, wind – a variety of things. But if it’s being used, a secondary footprint is created by indirectly contributing to the emissions of greenhouse gases. For Travelers, Scope 2 represents the emissions that are created by heating and cooling its buildings, running electricity and so on.”
In 2021, Travelers set a new goal of becoming carbon neutral across its owned operations by 2030. These include, for example, the company’s Hartford and St. Paul campuses and fleet of vehicles.
But how we evolve is just as important as when we evolve. For example, in December of 2025, we completed the installation of a solar array system (a collection of interconnected solar panels) at our Claim University in Connecticut, which we believe will largely offset our energy consumption at that site.
With eco-efficient operations top of mind, Patrick describes his objective for the future of Travelers, which also aligns with the company’s approach to creating sustained value: performing today, transforming for tomorrow and fulfilling the Travelers Promise. “My work focuses on increasing energy efficiency and reducing our carbon footprint. That’s how we’re transforming for tomorrow, but we’re also delivering on the ‘performing today’ imperative by implementing these energy-saving initiatives in a gradual, cost-effective way.”
